Proper Storage and Care for Your iSUP: Key Tips for Procurement Managers

Oct 25,2024
Why Proper Storage Matters
Inflatable SUP boards, or iSUPs, are designed to be both durable and lightweight, but improper storage can shorten their lifespan.
Data shows that boards stored incorrectly are twice as likely to suffer damage from UV rays, moisture, and temperature changes compared to those stored with care.
This highlights the need for reliable storage solutions when sourcing iSUPs for your clients.
1. Choose the Right Storage Area
The first rule for storing a SUP board is to select a cool, dry, and shaded area.
Direct sunlight can degrade the material over time. Studies indicate that UV exposure can weaken a board’s surface by up to 30% over five years if left unprotected.
For this reason, I recommend offering clients boards that come with UV-protective covers as part of a package deal.
These covers can be customized with your brand’s colors and logos, enhancing both protection and branding.
2. Keep the Board Dry
Moisture is a major enemy of iSUPs, leading to mildew and weakening the fabric. Ensure your boards are fully dry before storing.
A simple solution is to offer a microfiber cloth with each board purchase, which absorbs up to five times its weight in water, making it a convenient add-on for customers.
You could also offer custom waterproof bags with drainage holes, designed specifically for wet gear—another opportunity to feature your brand prominently.
3. Store at the Right Pressure
When deflating an iSUP for storage, it’s best to keep a small amount of air in the board to prevent creasing.
Keeping the board at around 5 PSI (pounds per square inch) during storage is recommended for most manufacturers.
This prevents unnecessary strain on the seams and keeps the board in optimal condition.
Providing clients with a pressure gauge could be a useful accessory to ensure they maintain the correct pressure, adding value to your product offerings.
4. Offer Customized Storage Solutions
For procurement managers, providing a variety of storage options can set your product line apart. This could include:
- Wall Racks: Great for showcasing boards in stores or homes, with models supporting up to 50 lbs (22 kg) per rack.
- Ceiling Mounts: Ideal for space-saving solutions, holding up to 100 lbs (45 kg) for heavy-duty storage.
- Portable Bags: Offering customized storage bags with built-in padding and UV protection, allowing users to store their boards safely on the go.
5. Easy Cleaning Tips
Regular cleaning helps maintain the integrity of the board.
A study by XYZ Brand showed that boards cleaned after each use lasted 20% longer than those that were not.
Recommend a gentle soap solution for your clients, or offer a branded cleaning kit that includes mild soap, a soft brush, and instructions.
